This type of leave is often granted for specific situations like parental leave, convalescent leave following an illness or injury, or for certain types of administrative absences.
The MPLP provides 12 weeks of non-chargeable parental leave to service members following the birth, adoption, or long-term foster care placement of a child. This includes birth mothers, fathers, adoptive parents, foster parents, and even surrogate parents who become legal parents.
The leave must be taken within one year of the qualifying event. Birth parents are also granted a period of convalescent leave (typically 6 weeks) in addition to the 12 weeks of parental leave
This type of non-chargeable leave is granted for a service member's physical recovery after an illness or injury. It requires approval from a doctor and the service member's chain of command. Convalescent leave is typically limited to 30 days
